Flourishing communities are impossible in the absence of stability and equity. Yet stability and equity require intentional action that fosters healthful practices while countering those that hinder healthy human development and healthy relationships. Our Public Health initiatives are designed with these dynamics in mind.

The Haitian Institute’s Public Health initiatives contribute to communal flourishing by working with communities to examine closely their prevailing traditions and beliefs, undermine anything–be it sexism or diseases that create undue burdens for individuals or groups of individuals, and promote practices that favor genuine flourishing and communal cohesion. We pay special attention to the development and health of young women by accompanying them in their journey from adolescence to young adulthood and from young adulthood to adulthood. We help young women recognize the many alternatives to early and unplanned pregnancies. And for those who do become pregnant, we help them resist the pressures to quit on their lives and accept the well-traveled road that lead to the lowest rungs of Haitian society. We are working to help girls and young women thrive!

Led by one of the Haitian Institute’s dynamic national directors, Bedina Achille (pictured above in pink and black), these young women meet monthly to discuss and learn together. They arrive at our center (SantRova-Ansafolè) by 7 pm on Friday, cook and eat together, and then spend the next several hours in a seminar-style environment where they think, debate, and strategize ways to flourish in Haiti despite the terrible odds against them. Some of them walk for about three hours to attend this crucial monthly meeting.
