Introducing SARAPED!

Saraped stands for Sant pou Avansman Rechèch ak Pratik nan Edikasyon Dekolonyal or Center for the Advancement of Research and Practice in Decolonial Education. It is a membership-oriented initiative. Those who choose to join must vow to lead exemplary lives that are based on the highest ideals such as truth and excellence. The goal is to transform teachers into role models, mentors, and scholars, and teaching into a vocation. Far too many Haitian teachers are unqualified, if not flat out incompetent, in a system where anything goes.

Transforming teachers into:

  • Role Models
  • Mentors
  • Scholars

Saraped is stepping in this messy gap to help teachers reach a minimum standard of competency and effectiveness as a matter of justice to both the teachers and the students who rely on them. Saraped also advises schools on improving the school environment. It provides training, resources, evaluation, and, above all, a sense of community, to make the education process more just, effective, and fulfilling for all involved.

All members of Saraped must take the below vow in they promise to uphold the highest standards of scholarship and effectiveness while embracing their role as mentors and community leaders.

Saraped’s Vow

Avèk ve sa a, mwen renonse tout enjistis, tout medyokrite ansanm ak tout ide ak pratik ki destriktif. Mwen afime ak tout fòs mwen ke m ap angaje m nan etid, rechèch, refleksyon ak lòt pratik konstriktif nan lide pou m akonpaye e anrichi elèv mwen yo ansanm ak kominote m nan.

With this vow, I renounce all injustice, mediocrity, and all destructive practices. I affirm with all my strength that I will commit myself to study, research, reflection, and other constructive practices in order to accompany and enrich my students as well as my community.

Mwen chwazi e pwomèt pou m mennen yon vi ki jis, nòb e bèl e pou m sèvi kòm modèl ekselans pou elèv ak jenn moun ki nan kominote a. M ap mache tèt kole ak bra sere ak lòt manb SARAPED yo pou ke ansanm nou atenn misyon nou pou n libere briyans lespri pèp nou an e ede yo bati yon vi pwospè. Sa se chwa m, se ve m e se vi m.

I choose and promise to lead a life that is just, noble, and beautiful, and to serve as a model of excellence for my students and for the youth of my community. I will walk hand in hand with the other members of SARAPED to fulfill our mission to liberate the brilliance of our people’s spirit and to help them build a prosperous life. This is my choice, my vow, and my life.

Jean Michel Moltimer Pierre, member of the first SARAPED cohort, leads 20 teachers in the administration of the vow. July 2025.
